Vs. Silverdale J2 Gold

From the Coaching Bench,

Well we had our second game of the season and unfortunately again we lost this time to Silverdale Gold 10 to 25. Both Terry and I were happy with the overall improvement in the team. Our tackling and fitness has improved although we will still be concentrating on it in practice. The other pleasing aspect to the game was our scrums, rucks and malls I think once the team gets the idea of supporting each other better and passing through the hands more, we will hopefully start winning a few games

Wayne Viviani once again had a storming game scoring our only 2 tries he is starting to get a good total up. Kaycee Anibueze was player of the day as he had a very good game in the forwards making some good tackles and runs as well as supporting the play well. We have a new player in our team Te Ruki or T for short he made some good runs from penalty taps and did well with his first game for us at prop.

To our parents it would be helpful to us if you could ensure your kids stay active outside of rugby so we keep the kids fitness up.

Thank you to all the parents who remembered the $2 and understanding it would be better to give it to Gypsy as she is the organisation guru behind this team.

Look forward to seeing you guys on Tuesday.

Please Remember: DON’T FORGET YOUR MOUTH GUARDS!!

Bottle Carriers

Another great trade-me score and we have two real bottle carriers for our bottles. Thanks to Kaycees Mum Candice who contributed $10 towards them- that still leaves me $27 out of pocket once I have paid for both plus postage- any one want to help me out with that please?

NZRU Code of Behaviour

Before the season started Terry and I attended a Ref's course. I learned that I don't know very much about the rules of Rugby at all and at this stage have no hope of being a Ref anytime soon.

But we also got a couple of cool hand outs. This one looks at the Code of Behaviour for Players, Coaches and Spectators. And the other has the basic rules for the different grades, which I'll put in another post.

From The Coaches Bench 18-5-10

Well we have played our first game, which was against East Coast Bays (ECB) Red. Unfortunately we lost the game 43 to 17. The team over all played well as a lot of boys are experiencing there 1st or 2nd year of rugby this year. Player of the Day was Wayne Viviani who had a very strong game making some decisive runs and breaking the line consistently. WayneLogan scored 2 tries in the game the first after making a seventy metre run. The second try coming from a busting run from 5m out with James Maber converting. Logan Lawrence scored our only other try skirting the ECB’s backline from their 22 to score in the corner. Unluckily dislocated his thumb in the process so had to go off and get it checked out. Hopefully he will be right to play sooner rather than later.

Both Terry and I were pleased with some aspects of the team play but we have to do a lot more work with our fitness and tackling which we will be working on in coming trainings.

I look forward to seeing everyone at training on Tuesday!

First Game! Vs. East Coast Bays Red

After only 6 short practices the day dawned on our first game. We were 3 boys down to start with 2 being away for reasons unknown and Ben down with a skate boarding injury. The Team had their warm-up on field 3 and then headed to field one for a pep talk and the big game!

It was a pretty exciting start to the game with Wayne scoring for us right off the whistle.

Unfortunately the conversion was just missed.

East Coast Bays teams are well known for being really hard. So it was a tough team to pull for our first game. But personally I was incredibly proud of how well our kids worked together as a team!

We also suffered our first injury of the season in our first game. After making a great try Logan had to head off to A&E with a dislocated thumb! Hopefully he will be back on the field soon!

That's Logan saying "HoorayOuch!" above.

Probably half of our team members are new this year and some haven't played Rugby at all before. So it says a lot for our team that the final score margin was what it was.

The scrums went really well showing that the kids have really been listening to Terry this week!

It will be great to see the kids skills improve over the weeks ahead... I'm looking forward to seeing them get passing and move the ball out to the wings! And some hard core tackle action! (Hint hint!!)

The final score was 43-17 to East Coast Bays. Better luck next time crew!

The Managers award went to Donero for being the first to arrive, for really listening and also running hard the whole game!

Player of the day this week a well deserving- Wayne!! Wayne was our main point scorer and played a consistently good game. He is always fantastic on gaining ground for the team

Next week the team is off to Silverdale to play their Gold team- Kieran and I won't be there unfortunately so will have to beg and borrow photos and a report from someone else!

See you at the field, Gypsy

Practice 15-4

Some movies from the Practice- the forwards practised their scrum with J2 Blue to get an idea of what the real thing would be like. Thanks to the J2 Blue coaches!

Practice 13 April - Backs

This is our Back line. It's a nice mix of last years players and some new boys as well. They are already working really well together and most seem to have a good handle on the calls.

Practice 13 April - Forwards

The team were divided up into forward and back packs at this weeks first practise. One of the big differences between J3 and J2 Rugby is that they get to contest the scrum- in J3 The scrum stayed in one spot and the team that fed into the scrum automatically won it. This year they can move up to half a metre towards the opposition and so have a chance of winning an opposition scrum.

The scrum is also a really important thing to get right as it is a key place that injuries can happen especially to the front row so Terry spent a heap of time making sure the kids had it right and were safe.
